Hollow Estrus

‘Estrus’ album by Tove Lo

and

Tradition Book : Hollow Ones by White Wolf for Mage : the Ascension.

Note how both have the same border motif (the cross on the corner).

The album has three corner motifs on a triangle.
The book has 4 corner motifs on bottom corners of its square.

The triangle and the square are significant in magical traditions.

The two objects are not quoting each other. Stacked like this, they describe the same operation from opposite ends: a container, and the heat that container exists to hold.

The book is White Wolf’s 2002 Tradition Book: Hollow Ones (revised), written by Angel Leigh McCoy and Tadd McDivitt. Inside the game it is a faction book. Outside the game it is a field guide to a real current that the game only named. The Hollow Ones are built from Romanticism and Decadence, not from a medieval lodge: Shelley, Poe, the opium lounges, Victorian séance tables, 1920s bohemia, then goth and industrial as the living residue. Their own revised text drops the cartoon nihilism and names the actual centre. The tradition is “the Living Embodiment of Romance”, not the paperback kind. Gothic horror, tragic love, the refusal of the flat and the banal, the insistence that how a thing is done matters. Other mages in the fiction dismiss them as juveniles and junkies. The book’s point is that the dismissal is the mistake. They have no seat, no orthodox sphere, no single rite. They borrow, water down, redraw the pentacle in eyeliner, and mean it. Ascension is treated as an open question. The work is the here and now.

The record is Tove Lo’s sixth album, Estrus, released 18 September 2026 on her own Pretty Swede label. She has been plain about the title. Estrus is an animal in heat: primal, mind and body wanting different things, wanting everything. The word is older than the biology textbook. Latin oestrus and Greek oistros mean gadfly, the sting, the frenzy. Plato uses it for the madness that will not let a person sit still. Pitchfork noted the same root: fertile window, and also frantic burning passion. She framed the record as “a lot of feelings, no solutions,” which is also track one. The sequence runs through anxious claim (“I’m Your Girl Right?”), self-flattery dressed as compliment (“Des fleurs,” with Stromae), drunk-and-horny, sex as anaesthetic (“F.A.M.T”), “I’m the Cake,” “The Bad One,” “Die for My Art with a Lonely Heart,” and closes toward “Source of Life,” where fertility, motherhood and mortality collide. The recklessness is also a clock.

The shared mark is a corner cross, the old boundary sign: fix this edge, ward this corner, this figure is closed on purpose. On the book it sits on the square. Two are visible at the bottom corners; the format is fourfold, a page, a room, a world with directions. On the sleeve it sits on a triangle, one cross at each vertex, and the triangle points down. In the alchemical grammar that both Romantic occultism and later gothic design keep raiding, the square is the fixed: earth, body, the four, the vessel that holds. The downward triangle is water and the receptive: chalice, womb, generation, the volatile poured into the fixed. Under the word ESTRUS the sleeve draws that literally — a vesica, the seed-shaped overlap of two circles, with a small cross hung from it. Generation marked as a doorway, not as a doctrine.

So the association says this.

The square is the tradition: a named, bounded, slightly embarrassed container for a real historical practice of making meaning out of ruin, artifice, sex, grief and style. The triangle is the current that practice actually runs on. Not a system. A season. Heat with no solution attached. The Hollow One is hollow on purpose; a cup, an orphan method, a refusal of both the old orthodoxy and the new banal. Estrus is what you put in the cup. Desire that makes you complicit in your own diminishment, art that costs loneliness, pleasure that does not cancel the fearful mind, fertility that is also frenzy. “Die for my art with a lonely heart” is the Romantic bargain stated without the velvet.

Three marks against four is the impact. The triangle does not complete the square into a stable seal. It sits on it, odd over even, unfinished on purpose. A closed cross-cornered square holds a rite and keeps it from leaking. A cross-cornered downward triangle generates and will not hold still. Read together, the gothic-romantic current stops being a costume and a sourcebook, and becomes a description of a real sequence: inherit the symbols, refuse the institution that claims to own them, run the current through the body, offer no ascent and no cure. The book says the vessel is legitimate. The record says the vessel is empty until the sting arrives, and that the sting is not enlightenment. It is estrus; fragile, anxious, fertile, and brief.
